Fun Sidewalk Inspiration and the Wooden Toy Holiday Gift Tradition!

A fun sidewalk find on my daily walk inspired me to reflect on childhood toys and to put together a holiday gift guide for classic (and newer) wooden toys

After dropping HJ off at school today, I came upon a box labeled “Fun and Free” on the walk back to the home office, and when I looked inside, an item caught my eye. It was a carved wooden vehicle with the undeniable features of a VW Bug and was emblazoned “The Toy Tree – Grand Rapids Michigan” on the bottom. As we are nowhere NEAR Grand Rapids, and this toy was in a box of very, very loved items, it made me think of how well crafted and honored true wooden toys are.

The first toy I ever purchased for Hazey, while she was in utero, was a hand-carved mover. A wooden iguana/lizard/frog type creature with rolling wheels and bulbous eyes stared down at her from her changing table for quite awhile. (I’m sorry Hazey, I never realized you thought it was creepy until you told me that last year!)

With the sidewalk inspiration guiding me, I wanted to make a quick list of my Biggest Bang for the Buck, High-Quality Wooden Toy Holiday Gifts! These are not DIY gifts, those will be in a separate post – as the featured items here are mainly geared to those loved ones that live far away – they can be ordered and sent with ease directly to your giftee!

And for transparency, please note that a few items listed are from our affiliate partners, but we never promote products here that we can’t truly support. The gifts listed are – in our opinions – education encouraging, gender non-conforming, heirloom quality, and confidence building. Please feel free to let us know what toys inspired you as a child – and if anyone happens to know the origins of “The Toy Tree!”

So, without further ado, here is the list of lovely toys that are built to last:
